The 10% Plan

Whether you’re in your first or 30th attempt at losing weight, you’ve probably heard that it’s not healthy to lose a large amount of weight at a time. A new book by George Blackburn, associate director of the division of nutrition at Harvard Medical School, argues that you should actually lose weight at a much slower pace to make the weight loss permanent.
 
The book is titled Break Through Your Set Point: How to Finally Lose the Weight You Want and Keep it Off, and in it Blackburn argues that you should aim at first to lose 10% of your body weight and try to keep just that amount off for up to six months, and then proceed to the next 10%. This then changes your body’s “set point,” which is essentially your body’s idea of what is normal.
 
Though this process might throw off your weight loss plan, remember that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Slow and steady wins the weight-loss race. [USA Today]
