Mix for Success

Ah, the age old question—do you burn the same amount of calories when you walk a mile, as opposed to running one mile? Studies contradict each other, and consider elements of oxygen inhalation and exhalation to calculate calorie burn and ultimately, weight loss.

Even though it’s difficult to pinpoint an answer to that question, it has been repeated time and again that a varying exercise plan will always be a winner. One, running everyday (especially on a treadmill) can get super boring, super quick. Two, your body can get adjusted to your routine and if you don’t crank up the intensity, you won’t burn as many calories. So don’t get stuck in a rut! Try turning up the incline if you’re attached to the treadmill, but also be brave and try something new! The stair-climbing equipment gives a totally different kind of workout—you’ll feel it working quickly even if you an all-star runner.

And then, of course, there is always walking—it’s easy for exercising amateurs, but also great to throw into the mix for those more experienced. Self magazine shares some great tips on making your walking workout most beneficial. What’s your favorite running alternative that really breaks a sweat? [Self]
