Change Your Life in Just an Hour a Day
If you're feeling stuck, unable to change something about yourself, try doing it for just an hour a day. Jeanie Daniel Duck, author of The Change Monster: The Human Forces that Fuel or Foil Corporate Transformation & Change, tells how one therapist helped a client who kept calling himself a loser.
"She said, 'okay, we all know you're a loser, but if you weren't a complete loser, what would you do?' [Turns out, the man knew what to do—he just didn’t believe he was capable.] So she said, 'Ffr an hour a day, I want you to pretend that you're not a loser.' He kept experimenting with longer and longer periods of time until he finally realized that he actually had what it takes to succeed."
As Duck reminds us, trying on new behavior is a lot less daunting than having to own it totally outright.
