Question:Should i try to be friends

Me previous bf were together for about 5 months, we were comfortable with each we got along untill we had miscommunication and would blow up and he would break us up normally it was about a day or 2 and we would talk about it and this happened about 2 to 3 times. Our last break up was after a fight but after we talked about it he felt like we werent going anywhere with this, i was really hurt about this cause it was sudden and unexpected but i agreed with him and asked if we could still be good friends he promised that we would and that he really cares for me and only wants the best for us and we will stay friends.. im still a little hurt by this and miss him dearly but i understand that this is best and want to talk to him and build off the friendship. We have only spoken once after that and it was a very casual conversation.

its only been a few days, should i wait longer? Should i accept this as a break up and dont talk to him? or can i talk to him soon..
