Want $1,000? Then Quit Smoking!

Today's foward thiker of the day award goes to Mayor Billy McDaniel of Metropolis, IL, who has made an incredible offer to help city employees quit smoking.

If they can quit smoking for a year—and they will be nicotine tested to prove it—they will get $1,000 each. Already, 15 people have signed up for the program, and mayor Billy McDaniel says the city can handle at least 30 people. Not only does the mayor hope people live healthier lives as a result, but also he hopes to lower their insurance costs.

No doubt some will say this is bribery, and the health benefits of quitting are worth more than $1,000 (plus all the money saved in not having to buy cigarettes). But if people quit as a result of this contest, does it matter?

Would you sign up for this type of program? And would you move to Metropolis to take part in it? [Associated Press]
