Light Up and Get Canned

A number of Whilrpool employees in Evansville, IN, may want to read our tips for quitting smoking. The company suspended 39 workers when they were caught smoking after stating they were non-smokers on their health insurance forms to get a cheaper premium.

For more than 10 years, Whirlpool insurance forms have asked employees if they smoke or not, and smokers are expected to pay an extra $500 for coverage. Whirlpool’s spokesperson said that the employees’ decision to light up when they claimed they were non-smokers to their insurance companies amounted to “falsification of company documents” and they plan to “treat it very seriously.” The company anticipates they will reprimand more workers once their investigation is complete, though they haven’t stated what the final punishment will be.

We’re guessing the nicotine fix wasn’t worth it considering they may be out of a job. [Evansville Courier & Press]
