Achieving Dreams After Retirement

Sam Fox is a 66-year-old retired lawyer who put down almost-lifelong roots in Washington D.C., until he bought a run-down farm, purely as an investment. Slowly but surely, this city boy was completely smitten with the place and spent most weekends there, trying to figure out a way to turn it into a business. Instead of his regular beach vacations, he decided to spend every spare minute at the farm. After nearly 20 years of work, the place is fully livable (there’s electricity now!) and consists of 45 animals at the moment. However, Fox has yet to break even.

If we are on a set career path, even one that proves to be lucrative, it is important to ask if it fits into our dreams. If not, are we somehow working towards those dreams? Fox says, “I feel like I have built something really beautiful, and that’s very satisfying to me. I’m proud of it.” He confidently states that, “you can make anything happen as long as you are willing to work at it.”

Fox never felt happy as a lawyer and has found his true passion out in the country among the cows. At the same time, his hefty retirement fund has allowed him to pursue this dream of farming without worrying too much about making a profit.
