Stressed at Work? Meditate!

“Why don’t you go and meditate for 30 minutes before you finish that proposal for the board meeting?”

Did your boss really just say that to you?

No, you’re not dreaming. More and more companies like Yahoo and PricewaterhouseCoopers are offering yoga, meditation, massage and other perks to get their workers feeling a bit calmer about their workload.

And there’s research coming out every day about the mental and health benefits of meditation in the workplace. In one 1997 study of stressed biotech workers in Wisconsin, those who meditated were happier and felt their work quality had improved.

Mark Thornton, a corporate meditation coach who spoke with First30Days about meditation and spirituality, has made a living out of getting super stressed-out people to find just a hint of calm in their workday. “Whether you’re a mother with three kids or a busy executive,” he says, “there are moments where you can start to create an oasis of calm in the middle of your real world, your real life.” [New York Post]
