Bipartisan Romance

Bipartisan Romance

Since it's an election year, you'll probably find yourself asking some of these questions when you're out searching for a new romance:

* Are your eyes glued on Denver, or are you holding out for Minneapolis?
* Are you an Obama girl or a McCain man?
* Do you dig donkeys or fancy yourself an elephant?

If you're a big-time political nerd, dating someone from outside your party might seem like outright sacrilege.

"I know there are quite a few 'mixed marriages' that have showed that love will conquer all," president of Young Democrats of Atlanta Mijha Butcher told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "By the same token, I also know many folks, including myself, who couldn't imagine being in a relationship with a Republican."

A difference in party loyalty can signal many contrasts in personal beliefs and ideals, but it can also lead to some very passionate
dinner conversations. There are couples, such as Rob and Heather Teilhet, who have proved political opposites attract. Rob is a Georgia Democratic state representative and Heather used to work for the state's Republican governor. They spend their evenings engaged in lively debates and Heather tries to ignore Rob's Barack Obama stickers.

Could you date or potentially marry someone with different political beliefs? [Atlanta Journal Constitution]

It worked for James Carville and his wife! I think the key is not to take yourself too seriously (in politics or anything else.) Political affiliation is just one aspect of self—when you're attracted to someone, the big picture is what's important. Can a Republican and a Dem share values? Absolutely. Will they run into a rocky patch once every four years? Maybe. Then again, it might not be so bad...making up after a fight is usually the best part!
