Standing in the Spotlight

Icon_tip_3

In the first days and weeks of a new job, it’s normal to feel like you are in the spotlight, because you are. Don't think of that as a bad thing. Everyone is curious about the new guy or gal. Remember, though, no one is looking for you to solve all the problems of the company in your first 30 days. At this stage, your co-workers are looking for clues as to who you are and how you work. They aren’t looking to finalize an opinion on you.

Take this time to keep a low profile in the social circles. Walk through the halls calmly and confidently with a pleasant face. Be sure to smile at the people you meet along the way and look them in the eye. Even if you are shy, make a point to look everyone in the eye. Avoiding eye contact makes you look like you have something to hide.

Think of this as your moment to shine, so work it.
