Wal-Mart Goes Local

Few of us would factor a store like Wal-Mart in to our plan for going green, but change is a-brewing. Not long after it decided to go organic, the mega-chain added “local” to its list of sustainability ideas! While the majority of their non-edible goods probably come from abroad, produce will now be coming from around the block...ok, maybe from within the state. But wait, this isn’t entirely good news!
 
Buying goods nearby is about supporting the local community, but for a business, it’s also about cutting costs and specifically, fuel costs. Wal-mart’s going local is economically wise, but their definition of “local” may differ from yours. Unless we’re talking about Rhode Island, transporting goods from one part of a state to another can mean hundreds and hundreds of miles.
