Everyday Change

Be a Tortoise, Not a Hare

Remember the saying "Slow and steady wins the race?" Turns out it's true. Slow down at work, with your partner and just in general. You may be surprised at how much sweeter life is when you aren't looking at it at warp speed.

Wal-Mart Goes Local

Wal-Mart Goes Local

Few of us would factor a store like Wal-Mart in to our plan for going green, but change is a-brewing. Not long after it decided to go organic, the mega-chain added “local” to its list of sustainability ideas! While the majority of their non-edible goods probably come from abroad, produce will now be coming from around the block...ok, maybe from within the state. But wait, this isn’t entirely good news!

Buying goods nearby is about supporting the local community, but for a business, it’s also about cutting costs and specifically, fuel costs. Wal-mart’s going local is economically wise, but their definition of “local” may differ from yours. Unless we’re talking about Rhode Island, transporting goods from one part of a state to another can mean hundreds and hundreds of miles.

If you were not a Wal-Mart supporter before, how do you feel now knowing the produce sold is organic and/or local? [NPR]

Although I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart, I do shop there occassionally because we don't have a Target near us. I'm glad to see they're moving in the right direction, even if it's only baby steps. I doubt they'll ever be pioneers in the "green" movement, but every little bit helps.

Honestly, I think it's great that Wal-Mart will be supporting local businesses. They have the power to do good. I hope it works out.
