Potter Author Admits to Depression

Famous Brit JK Rowling, author of the renowned Harry Potter series, recently admitted that she had battled serious depression following the end of her first marriage. Rowling has said that she even contemplated suicide at one point, but found her way back through intensive therapy. She went so far as to say that the Dementor characters in the books were based on her experience with depression.

Rowling is probably not the first celebrity you’ve heard of who suffers from depression, but her story does show that depression doesn’t discriminate and it is pretty widespread. Rowling shared her story in the hopes of dispelling any stigma that people feel depression.
