The Toughest Job You'll Ever Love
Yes, it really does hurt! If this is your first time, the physical aftermath of labor and delivery can catch you by surprise. Most women feel pretty beat up by the time their baby finally arrives. You’re most likely swollen and sore—sometimes from head to toe. There can be hemorrhoids, bruises, broken blood vessels and pain from tearing, an episiotomy or a C-section incision. To top it off, your belly is like a big lump of dough!
It is vital to realize that you need serious recovery time and care! Here are few reminders on how to take proper care of yourself in the coming days:
- Water In! As a new mom, you can’t get enough water. Keep that glass or water bottle filled.
- Water Out! Be prepared to discharge several pounds of fluid through extra perspiration, a lot of urination and intense night sweats. Make sure you have plenty of extra sheets and towels.
- Baby Your Bottom! To relieve swelling and speed healing, you need to lie down often with a pillow under your hips and something frozen on whatever area hurts the most. Keep your bottom clean—a squirt bottle filled with warm water, antiseptic spray and a sitz bath work wonders.
- Be ready for the mess! Your baby is not the only messy one. You’ll be bleeding, discharging and urinating involuntarily for the next few weeks. Have plenty of sanitary pads and even adult diapers on hand until everything gets back to normal.
