Empty Nest Towns

Now that the children have gone (in some cases, gone, come back and gone again) you’re no longer tied to home. While many empty nesters choose to stay put most entertain the idea of moving on.

Forbes has a list of the top communities for those who have empty nests—and you won’t find any references to retirement facilities in Florida here. Today’s empty nesters are looking for good weather, certainly, but also proximity to work and cultural amenities in an easy-to-navigate location. Also high on the priority list are a smaller home that’s easy to maintain and the ability to walk around the neighborhood.

So where have all the parents gone? Look for them in Las Vegas, Austin, Phoenix, Raleigh, NC and Dallas. And if you’re really set on that Florida retirement dream, Forbes suggests Orlando for its quality medical care, and the fact that with an attraction like Disney World nearby, you can probably encourage the family to visit more often. Which city gets your vote? [Forbes]
