"One World, One Dream"

The slogan for the Olympics this year is “One World, One Dream,” which seems particularly relevant when we think about all of the Games’ participants standing side by side, despite conflicting political and cultural beliefs. Does an event like the Olympics truly bring us together? Or are we momentarily putting aside beliefs in the name of sports?

This year in particular has brought to light more than a few controversial issues ranging from China’s questionable human rights to the poor, current environmental state of the country. And yet, as Li Xing points out in an article entitled, “One Hundred Years of Dreaming,” shouldn’t we respect China’s long-held dream of hosting the Olympics, especially considering the years of war and poverty the nation has endured?

Xing recalls his fellow Chinese hoping for the opportunity to host, the ability to send athletes and, of course, the possibility of winning a medal. After many years, China’s dream of hosting has finally come true.
