Let the Job Hunt Begin!

Icon_tip_2

In order to jumpstart your life after college, you’ll need to kick your job search into high gear.

The best way to start is to do some research. Pick up some magazines and newspapers and start reading through them as a way to familiarize yourself with some fields you might be interested in. Search through the classified ads and see if there’s anything promising. Go online and search through job boards; if you find a position that strikes your fancy, find out more about the company on the internet. Keep an open mind while you’re doing this—try to imagine yourself in a number of positions.

Once you have an idea of the type of job or company you want to work for, get to know your potential employers. You should find out as much as you can about companies before you interview with them. Read the company’s mission statement and determine if its philosophy corresponds with what you want. Additionally, find out what they expect from and offer to their employees, such as work hours, salary compensation and benefit packages. These are important facts to know before applying, as well.

You can get most of this information from the web, so do a thorough internet search. Also, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works at a particular company or field that you are interested in. Talk to that person and see if they have any advice about the work environment or how to get a foot in the door.
