Advice on Change

Create a vision of what "good" would look like.
Nothing big, bold or beautiful was ever created in a country, a family, a company or a life, without a vision. Flesh it out, color it in. Put in every detail you can imagine so that no matter how hard or chaotic things might be right now, you've got that vision to look to, to keep you going, to remind you why, in the end, it's all worth it.

Take courage and energy from the "defining moments" in your life.
Look back into your life to those times when you found something in yourself you didn't know you had and pulled it out. When you said, "Yes, I am" or "No, I'm not," when you stood for something even though it wasn't popular. Maybe you won, maybe you lost, but you never thought of yourself in the same way again. Make a list of those moments. Embrace them and treasure them. They represent how good you already are and remind you that you've got everything you need to step forward into the change - with all flags flying.

Let go.
Let go of all the "voices" in your head that tell you to wait, to be cautious, to shrink back from the change, from the risk, from the opportunity; voices that say, "Who are you to expect so much? Let's just settle for what we've got." Don't listen. You've got a life to live (the only one you've got for sure) and you can't allow yourself to be held back by irrelevant doubts and fears. Let them go. All of them. Go home and throw out fifty things. That'll get you warmed up. And I don't mean just the physical clutter, I mean all that mental and emotional baggage as well. Wait 'til you see how good, how energized you're going to feel!

Get in touch with what makes you unique.
Polish up your own personal "brand." When you're going through any major change in your life, it's good to know who the heck you are. Complete this sentence: "I'm _____ and I'm the one who...." Be specific, be bold, be creative. What do you want to be known for, when it's all said and done. And remember, you don't have to be everybody's everything - if enough people love ya, the ones who don't, don't matter.

Distinguish between "facts" and "interpretations" in your life.
Most of us slap negative interpretations on the things that happen in our lives, whether someone doesn't answer our email or doesn't buy what we're selling. We assume we've failed, aren't good enough, or (if we're really down) that we should just quit. When the only "fact" was that we didn't get the answer we wanted. Make empowering interpretations for the things that happen in your life that propel you forward towards your vision of what good looks like. You don't have time to weigh yourself down with phony, negative interpretations. Don't do it.
