A Solid Foundation
Shannon Wiltse had waited her whole life to find a man who wanted to be more than "just friends." Born with a physical ailment that left her without a left hand or feet, she was able to overcome her disability by finishing college at the top of her class, becoming a successful geneticist and even purchasing her own home. But it was in the dating world that she found the most obstacles. That is, until she tried online dating.
Six days after signing up for a site, she received an email from a handsome man named Allan DeWall who was interested in her profile. The two clicked and spent hours talking about cats and Nascar. When they finally decided to meet six weeks later, Shannon decided it was time to let him in on her disability. "You need to know," Shannon told Allen, "that I'm missing everything from the knees down, on both legs, and on my left arm from the elbow down, and on my right hand I have one digit, just one finger."
DeWell had been divorced before and had learned that a person's true beauty is on the inside. The process of online dating had allowed him to get to fall for Wiltse's personality without any preconceived notions about her physicality.
After more than five years of dating, the couple finally married this year. Before meeting Wiltse, DeWall says he hadn't ever even had a disabled friend.The beauty of online dating is that it allows you to get to know your mate's personality before jumping to conclusions about his or her looks.
