Your Doctor, Your Ally

Icon_tip_2

Your doctor is your friend and ally in the battle against your illness and the most important thing you will get from your doctor is information and guidance. Sure, he or she will also prescribe you medicine and perform tests, but the best way to be informed about your health diagnosis is to talk to your doctor. Tell him or her about any change in your symptoms and any concerns or fears you have about your condition. The only way this person can treat you is if you’re honest and forthcoming about your situation.

You should also ask your doctor any questions you have about your diagnosis. Here are some of the most important questions to ask your doctor:

  • What exactly is the condition?
  •  What are the symptoms?
  • What are the different treatment options available?
  • How long will I have to deal with this condition?
  • Is there anything in my lifestyle that I can change to improve my recovery?
  • What is my long-term outlook?

Remember that you’re entitled to information from your medical provider regarding your diagnosis. If your doctor does not give you adequate answers or the attention you need, consider finding another medical provider. Also, seeking out a second opinion is an important step for those who need confirmation of their sickness before undergoing treatment.
