Top 5 Things to Do

Whether you want to start your own business, belt out jazz tunes professionally or write a best-seller, consider this moment as the launching pad for your dreams. Speak your dream aloud with conviction, while silencing the voices in your head that say your dream is impossible. Pursuing your dreams may sound like a lofty goal at first, but a down-to-earth plan for success will help you stay focused. Try these five tips to start:

1. Identify your dream.

If you’re having trouble articulating your specific dream, start a journal and jot down some ideas. Don’t worry if your aspirations aren’t obvious to you—some ideas take a while to evolve. Use the journal to help you define your dream and try to be as specific as possible about your intentions.

2. Do your research.

Find out as much as you can about your dream. Set aside time to explore the ways you can follow your heart. Go to the library and surf the web to find the best resources for your endeavor. Make a timeline for the first 30 days and beyond.

3. Build your support system.

Surround yourself with people who support your dream and find a “buddy” to which you can be accountable. If you don’t know of anyone in your dream field, set up an informational interview and prepare a list of relevant questions. Also consider joining a professional organization to deepen your contact list. This process may also lead to finding a mentor.

4. Take small steps.

The path to your dream might seem like a gigantic and unmanageable task. In order to make it more attainable, break down your dream into smaller steps and do a little bit every day. These small tasks could include making a phone call, setting up a meeting or doing research on the web. This method will help you build momentum in your pursuit of a dream while minimizing that overwhelming feeling.

5. Enjoy the ride.

As much as you want to reach your goal as soon as possible, remember to enjoy the process. View your journey to your dream as part of that dream—it will make your success that much sweeter.
