Question:From Big City to Smaller City

Just moved from the Big Apple to Albuquerque. I love being here but someimes the city just seems to shut down too early. What's a single girl to do who doesn't want to go to bars?

Answer:

When I lived in a smaller city, I joined several clubs, such as University Women, Toastmasters, and the singles group at my church. I also joined a bowling league. Don't laugh! Bowling is having a comeback because of Wii and the fancy things bowling lanes are doing now to attract customers (like laser lights and music). Also, I did some volunteer work. Besides giving you something to do outside of your home, activities like these help you build networks of new friends (who might introduce you to a bachelor friend of theirs). Wishing you the best of luck! Let us know how it works out for you.

Answer:

I'm sure leaving the city is a big adjustment—I know I've gotten used to the 24-hour nature of it!

I'm sure Albuquerque has some nightlife options other than bars. Is there a local weekly that has event listings? What about reading series at local bookstores, or theatre and music events? Think about the things you first did when you moved to NYC or another city: I bet the criteria was cheap, free, and interesting. Look for those things in your new town. If all else fails, create your own fun by making some new friends and hosting a dinner party...
