Mediation can be a route to an amicable divorce with both parties being prepared to argue sensibly for what they feel is fair without getting into a long, drawn out fight with no one gaining anything but the lawyers.  Gary J. Friedman has written a book about mediation called "A Guide to Divorce Mediation: How to Reach a Fair, Legal Settlement at a Fraction of the Cost"
