Women and Depression

Hurray! Researchers are finally exploring the differences that gender can play in mental health diagnosis. Men and women are biologically different and this needs to be taken into account when treating patients for depression. In the past, a women’s sadness or irritability was often attributed to PMS symptoms. However, several major studies have recently found that women are 1.5- 3 times more likely to suffer from Major Depressive Disorder than men. Psych Central thinks this suggests that the effect of female hormones on mood state needs to be studied further.
