As we're heading into the end of the year, it's list making time. Best TV shows (Mad Men, Brothers and Sisters) best films (The Dark Knight...umm...) and best music (Santogold, Vampire Weekend).

And, as long as we're giving out awards, let's give one for parents who take their kids to work every day. Kory Gardner and Jason Hammel of the critically-acclaimed band Mates of State are on tour with their daughters Magnolia and June in tow. ABC recently profiled the couple, and it's easy to see why these two would want their kids with them at all times. First of all, they are cuter than we ever hope our kids could be. Second, who wouldn't want to take little ones on the road when Gardner and Hammel make it look so easy?

To be sure, it's not easy, but honestly—what a fun way to give kids a chance to see the world and get an experience as a family they can always treasure? It's not the way most parents go about things, but it is a good reminder that new moms and dads don't have to sacrifice their dreams in order to be good parents, or vice versa. And as we head into a season of holiday travel, it's also a reminder that you can probably survive that trek to your parent's place, knowing that the kids will be back at school and out of your hair (and car/plane/train) in no time.

Via The Frisky (one of our favorite sites ever) today:

In last weekend’s edition of the New York Times Magazine, Alex Kuczynski, the author of Beauty Junkies, writes about having a baby by surrogate in ”Her Body, My Baby.” In her late 30s, Kuczynski couldn’t get pregnant. Over the course of several years, she tried in vitro fertilization and miscarried multiple times. Finally, she found a surrogate mother who would carry, as she puts it, “the product of my egg and my husband’s sperm.” It’s a story about the lengths a woman will go to have a baby—but it’s also a story only a wealthy woman could tell, as Kuczynksi and her financier husband spent over $100,000 to make her baby dreams come true. (The surrogate was paid $25,000 for the use of her womb.) In the article’s comments, readers are tearing Kuczynski apart, deeming her a “disgusting… spoiled brat” and a “rich, self-obsessed snob,” while far fewer others are commending her for telling her story at all.

Can we really crucify a woman for wanting to have a baby at any cost? Do you judge Kuczynski this harshly, or can you understand what it is to want a child so badly?

The current economy means we’re all cutting back on spending—even with the holidays looming (bah humbug!). But one group that isn’t watching their pennies? Pet owners.

According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans will spend $43.4 billion this year on their pets—26% higher than what was spent in 2004.

And for our little furry friends, the news just keeps getting better: the group estimates that spending is on pace to grow more than 13% by 2013 (that's a LOT of tiaras and puppy sweaters). In fact, a poll earlier this year in ShopSmart says female shoppers are more likely to buy cheaper food and toiletries for themselves, but are refusing to switch to less-expensive pet food and personal care items.

We’ve often joked that if reincarnation does in fact exist, we want to come back as our pets. They spend most of the day napping and don’t have to worry about pesky things like the economy.

We understand the need to make the experience of giving birth as comfortable as possible (after all, it’s one of the most uncomfortable events in a woman’s life), so we weren’t surprised to read in The New York Times that home births are on the rise—even in cramped NYC apartments that offer little privacy.

But for these women, a few noisy neighbors are fine if it means skipping the hospital. Pregnant women across the country say that they’re worried about receiving medical intervention, especially with the rising rate of C-sections. Others have been inspired by the documentary “The Business of Being Born,” which features producer Ricki Lake giving birth in the tub of her NYC apartment.

We must admit, the idea of a home birth sounds intriguing. But we’re also a little high-maintenance, and this is a messy process. One midwife explained that couples should get the pads used for house-training puppies. Giving birth while sitting on a Wee Wee pad? That part isn’t as intriguing.

And of course, there are the risks: What if something goes wrong? Is a midwife really equipped to deal with a serious medical emergency? If you're planning a home birth or have had one, share your story!

Born Tracy LaGondino, Beatie underwent a sexual reassignment procedure in order to become a man. Lucky for him, though, he kept his female reproductive organs. When his wife was unable to get pregnant due to a hysterectomy, Beatie decided to put his uterus to work and carry a child himself. Their daughter, Susan, was born in July.

For new moms and dads, the co-sleeping debate is about as tiring as, well, waking up to a crying newborn every two hours. And it doesn’t help that there are conflicting research and opinions on the issue everywhere you turn.

In an attempt to make life for us parenting newbies a little easier, Babble.com compiled the opinions of leading childcare experts to find out if co-sleeping is a wonderful bonding experience for parent and child—or a dangerous practice that should be avoided at all costs. We’d love to tell you that the answer to the question is found in their responses, but the truth is it’s still a complicated issue. But it is interesting to note that a few doctors have softened their stance a bit.

While Dr. Spock, the childcare guru of moms and dads the world over, is still completely against it, Dr. William Sears and Dr. Alan Greene admit that some form of co-sleeping is okay—provided proper measures are taken.

And Dr. Ferber—who invented the world-renowned “Ferber Method” to get babies to sleep through the night—also now concedes that “children can sleep well during a wide range of circumstances.” He does caution, however, that many parents have difficulty stopping the practice. A valid point considering that we personally know a few parents that now have a five, six, or seven-year old in their beds every night. That can't make for a restful sleep—and we’re guessing any romance between mom and dad is surely falling by the wayside.

Prospective parents are forced to jump through hoops to adopt—and even that doesn’t guarantee them a child.

With certain states now happily barring people from adopting (hello, Arkansas), you’d think someone would be doing something to make it easier in other parts of the country. Well, think again. According to a recent report by Listening to Parents, adoption—no matter where you live in the US—is harder than ever.

It seems like a no-brainer to us: a loving parent wants to bring a child into their loving home. While many assume it’s difficult because everyone wants a cute and cuddly newborn—and there’s not enough of them to go around—that’s not the case. In fact, a large majority of people polled would be thrilled with a child older than 6. And there are even far more people willing to adopt teens and kids with disabilities.

So, what’s the problem? Research shows that many foster care bureaucracies handle initial calls badly and simply don’t listen to parents throughout the process. Not to mention that prospective parents are often treated like criminals, being fingerprinted on site and answering intimate personal questions over the phone. Those two factors alone can make the average, law-abiding, “I have nothing to hide” citizen queasy.

The result: for every 1,000 people who call a public child welfare agency seeking to adopt, only 36 do so. And that’s a real shame because there are currently over 100,000 kids in foster care just waiting to be placed into permanent loving homes.

Ok, now we’re depressed, but we hope you can lift us out of it. For those of you that are going through—or have completed—an adoption, how is the process? What would you change, and what do you feel works? Share a happy ending if you've had one!

By now, most of you have read that Arkansas voted to ban unmarried (read: gay) couples from adopting. It's unfortunate that this privilege has been taken away, because it seems that it’s the kids that really suffer.

While the ban technically affects all unmarried couples, it was written to prevent gay couples from raising children in Arkansas, which has three times as many children who need homes as people willing to adopt or foster them (um, maybe Arkansas needs better legislation on sex education, including birth control.)

Some are saying the measure passed because of strong opposition in the state to the candidacy of Barack Obama (Senator John McCain won the state by a fairly large margin). “I think white Arkansas Democrats felt cross-pressured in this race,” Jay Barth, a political science professor at Hendrix College told The New York Times. “They didn’t want to vote for what they viewed as Bush’s third term, but they also couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Barack Obama. One response was just to bow out of voting, and their absence probably helped this proposal succeed.”

Arkansas is not the first state to enforce such a ban: Florida and Mississippi prohibit adoption by gay individuals and couples, while Utah prevents unmarried cohabitated couples from adopting.

What do you think of these restrictions on adoption? Is a loving home a bigger priority than a married or unmarried, gay or straight set of parents?

We're thinking that if they'd never let the Spice Girls happen, this might not be such an issue.

We kid, sort of. Kids are exposed to a great deal these days. The government hasn’t detailed what the new curriculum will look like, but schools will be asked to provide lessons on relationships and contraception, with elementary school children being taught about body parts, preparing for puberty and relationship feelings. Lessons will become more sophisticated as kids get older.
The United States lacks a national curriculum, with the decision to offer sex education left up to individual states and districts (and as we've seen, that doesn't always work so well). Do you feel that kindergarten is too young to think about the birds and the bees? It is a senseless tragedy and sad reminder of the fact that no one is immune to this kind of grief.

What is interesting, at this point, is to see how someone in the spotlight copes with it all. News reports say that Jennifer is a "rock" for her family, and is being very strong as she deals with everything that's happening around her. There's no doubt that her faith is a foundation for that strength. She's also beloved by those she's worked with as well as her fans, as evidenced by the outpouring of support in the press and online. While we're sure that there are very tough times ahead for Hudson, and we can't know what goes on behind closed doors, it would seem that she is surrounded by the kind of love that can only help during the grief process.
Research also finds that the stress our pets feel is nothing compared to what we humans go through on a daily basis (big surprise). After all, we’re the ones that have to go to work and pay the bills, while our pets generally lie around all day, waiting for us to come home and rub their bellies.

Maybe try giving your pet a little extra love when you come home today, and take comfort in the sweet friend who loves you, no matter what!

So much for blaming the fact that you missed mom’s birthday or left the car running in the driveway (uh, not that we’ve done any of those things) on being pregnant! Despite the belief by most women that carrying a little bundle of joy has a definite impact on memory, an Australian study has found no evidence to suggest that pregnancy affects a woman's cognitive abilities.

“It really leaves the question open as to why (pregnant) women think they have poor memories when the best evidence we have is that they don’t,” says study leader Professor Helen Christensen (ed. note: not to be confused with Helena Christensen, the supermodel).
As a woman, the urge and societal pressure to be thin and fit never go away. For some, the images we see are just too much—a waif-like Nicole Ritchie with barely a bump now carries her child with arms that look like matchsticks.
Breasts. Half the world has them, and the other half certainly doesn't seem to mind looking at them—so why is breastfeeding still such a taboo? Breast milk is key to providing nutrients in the first few days of a child's life, and breast milk is full of vitamins and minerals your little one needs to keep healthy.

Busy new mom Angelina Jolie apparently does it, and doesn't mind being snapped by partner Brad Pitt while she does. The image is now on the cover of W magazine's "art issue." It is not a sexualized shot, in fact, you can't see a breast and the only indication there's a baby in the shot is a tiny hand poking up.

Yet it's newsworthy. We're supposing this is for two reasons: One, the words "breast" and "Angelina" are always big sellers. Two, breastfeeding has always been a hot issue...if not the actual act, then seeing someone do it publicly.

With cold and flu season on the horizon, drug companies have finally admitted that children under 4 should not be given over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. The announcement comes about a week after the FDA found little evidence that the remedies even work on kids that young, but decided against a ban out of fear that parents would then give their little ones adult medicines instead.

Pediatricians have been calling for a ban on marketing cough and cold remedies for children under 6. While that isn’t happening anytime soon (the FDA is still investigating and it could take up to a year for their final verdict), the drug companies have at least agreed to add a warning to their products that parents should not give children antihistamines to make them sleepy (as sad as it is, we do know parents who have resorted to this tactic.)

Bad reactions to OTC cough and cold medicines send some 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year, with symptoms including hives, drowsiness, and unsteady walking. Many kids overdose by taking medicines when their parents aren't looking.

New research from the American Academy of Pediatrics says that children under five should not have exotic pets (think hedgehogs, hamsters, baby chicks, lizards, turtles, etc.) because they can carry dangerous and potentially deadly germs. In addition, these pets may be more prone than cats and dogs to bite, scratch or claw.

The report also goes on to say that kids that young should avoid contact with these animals in petting zoos or other public places. Children are at risk for getting sick after kissing the animals or touching them and then putting their hands in their mouths.

Check your pet food label before feeding your furry friend tonight: Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of all dry pet food products, citing potential contamination with salmonella.

The recall affects all food produced at the company’s plant in Everson, Pa. between Feb. 18 and July 29. The recall reaches 31 states and various brands and said the action was taken solely as a precaution (so far, no animals have actually fallen ill). The brand names include some items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.

The company said consumers should look for “17” as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC for products affected. For Pedigree products, they should look for 'PAE' on the bottom line.
It turns out eating fish isn’t just good for adults—it can also help make a baby’s skin as smooth as, well... A new study from The University of Gothenburg in Sweden has found that infants that start eating fish before the age of 9 months have a lower risk of developing eczema, a hereditary skin condition that causes rashes, redness, itchiness and drying (just to name a few of the uncomfortable symptoms).

In fact, researchers found that infants with fish in their diets were 25% less likely to develop eczema. Since baby food manufacturers don’t make fish products, it’s recommended that it be slowly introduced with other solids, preferably in puree form at about 5 to 6 months of age.

Well, aside from the fact that we can all learn a thing or two about fiscal management, it's the last reason that caught our eye and gave cause for comment. The author proposes that this means that Wall Street sharks, once consumed by their work, will now have time to actually spend with the children they hardly know.
We can't attest to the veracity of his statements—after all, we're sure there are plenty of hard-working dads out there who love their kids very much—but we do wonder whether or not this whole thing might cause some fathers to rethink priorities.
Meanwhile, her mom, Valerie, had thought she was in labor the day before, but was told at the hospital that she was experiencing Braxton Hicks and was sent home. Early the next morning, she woke up and knew something wasn’t right—and soon after that her water broke.

With a 911 operator on the phone to guide her, Jaidan delivered her brother Kai’rin, placing him gently on a towel and tying off his umbilical cord with her shoelace. Both mother and baby are fine—and big sister has a story she can tell for years to come!

What happened to the days when baby girls wore cute pink slippers or shiny Mary Janes? The latest fashion trend for tots—high heel crib shoes—is causing quite a stir. Some people think it’s adorable, while others find it an attempt to create even younger clones of Paris Hilton. Heels for babies that can't even walk? Really?

Created by two Seattle moms, Heelarious shoes sell for $35 a pair, and come in such designs as leopard satin print, hot pink patent, black satin, zebra satin, black patent and hot pink satin. The shoes only come in one size (0-6 months), and aren’t meant to be walked in. In fact, the heels collapse if a baby attempts to stand on them.

Heelarious brags that they have “conquered the last frontier of baby fashion in such a fabulous way that we have to think that Carrie Bradshaw would most certainly approve.” Wow, we never thought we’d see the day when a Sex and the City reference made it into the same sentence as baby footwear.

It’s no secret that more and more women are having babies at a later age, causing some of us to worry about chances of conceiving. Now, there’s a new fertility test on the market that claims it can actually count how many eggs we have left in our ovaries.

PlanAhead allegedly estimates how many eggs remain by checking the levels of three ovarian-related hormones.
We say “allegedly” because the product—which costs $350—hasn’t been approved by the FDA, so it’s considered purely experimental. And of course, there are other non-egg related problems that can interfere with a woman’s fertility. Experts are skeptical about how accurate (and worthwhile) this test truly is, but we want to know what you think. Would you spend money on this sort of test to determine whether pregnancy is an option? Or do you need more concrete evidence that the product really works?

If you've ever seen a made-for-TV movie about a crazy nanny or off-kilter nurse (or seen a recent episode of One Tree Hill), you've probably had a nightmare about one of them running off with your child. Being a new dad is fun, but it also comes with the awesome responsibility of keeping your child out of harm's way.

Good news for expectant and new parents: According to a study published in the latest issue of the American Journal of Nursing the number of infants taken by non-family members in hospitals and health settings fell by nearly half between 1993 and 2006.

Experts credit new training, protocols and security devices with the decline in hospital abductions, which often takes place when someone (usually a woman) impersonates a member of the hospital staff. Bar-coded wrist bands, surveillance cameras, guards and alarmed doors are also available to stop would-be abductors.

The same study did find that the number of babies kidnapped from homes and public places have nearly doubled. But rest assured, there are security measures that new parents can take: Researchers say parents should beware of anyone who seems too interested in their newborn in public or who shows up at a private home unannounced. In addition, because some kidnappers have been alerted by lawn signs, balloons and banners welcoming a new baby, parents may want to think twice about choosing such celebratory measures. Some newspapers have even stopped running birth announcements for the same reason.

What do you think of these extra precautions? Is it paranoia or good advice? Sound off below.

Forget foreign policy and healthcare spending. What kind of dog should a potential first family get?

When it comes to choosing the right pet for the potential first family, the poodle comes out on top. In a national poll conducted by the American Kennel Club, it was selected as the dog of choice for the Obama family.

“It is no surprise the American public chose a poodle for Obama,” says spokeswoman Lisa Peterson. The breed is the eighth most popular nationally and the third most common type of dog in Washington, D.C.
Other breeds in the poll included the Wheaten terrier, miniature schnauzer, the Bichon Frise, and the Chinese Crested. Each was included in the survey for being hypoallergenic since one of the Obama’s daughters reportedly suffers from allergies. Senator Obama and his wife have reportedly promised their girls a dog after the presidential campaign is over in November. But that was just the beginning of her entertaining request. Some other fun excerpts from the listing include:
"If you cannot multitask, or communicate without being passive aggressive, don't even bother replying."
And finally: “I can be a tad difficult to work for. I'm loud, pushy and while I used to think we paid well, I am no longer sure.”

With all the talk about child obesity in the US, we know tons of new moms who are watching everything that goes into their child's mouth very carefully. So when we saw the photos of this eleven-month-old baby, we were quite shocked.

The child weighs 62 pounds, the average size of an eight year old (babies at nearly a year are only about 15 pounds.) Doctors think he may have an endocrine problem. We hope they figure it out soon—as we all know, overweight kids are prone to numerous health problems, including diabetes.

While the debate over vaccinations rages on, the number of measles cases in the US has reached its highest level in over a decade, with nearly half the cases involving children whose parents have chosen not to immunize.

According to the Centers for Disease Control , 131 cases of measles were reported from January to July of this year, compared to 42 cases in all of 2007. Of the 131 cases, 112 children were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. In addition to measles, there have also been recent outbreaks of pertussis (aka whooping cough) reported in the US.

According to the Institute for Vaccine Safety, 21 states offer a provision for personal belief exemptions. And while many parents are concerned about the possible link between vaccinations and autism, these recent outbreaks have health officials worried that if more and more parents choose not to vaccinate their children, there will be more outbreaks of dangerous diseases.
New pet owners might want to take note: having a pet can be downright expensive. Of course, most of us don’t go to the lengths that New York City native David Best goes to for his beloved pooch, Elvis. The dog lover (that’s an understatement!) recently threw his dog a $10,000 “bark mitzvah.”

It seems that when it comes to little Elvis (who just turned 13 in dog years), “money is no object,” says Best. And he definitely spared no expense while planning the event, which included Elvis “reading” from the Torah and giving a barking bat mitzvah speech. The 100-person guest list included such luminaries as “sexpert” Dr. Ruth, Broadway star Patti LuPone, and Elvis’s mom (brought into town by the dogs’ breeder.)
In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has said babies should be kept away from television altogether. And now, France has taken a big step and banned French channels from airing TV shows aimed at children under 3 years old to shield them from developmental risks it says television viewing poses at that age.

"Television viewing hurts the development of children under 3 years old and poses a certain number of risks, encouraging passivity, slow language acquisition, over-excitedness, troubles with sleep and concentration as well as dependence on screens," the ruling said.

There are two foreign channels aired in France on cable TV: BabyFirstTV and Baby TV. Both have 24-hour programming dedicated to baby-targeted programming. The authority has also ordered French cable operators that air foreign channels with programs for babies to broadcast warning messages to parents.

While we Americans have been able to saddle our little ones with whatever weird name pops into our heads (hello Apple, Knox, and Pilot Inspektor), the Swedes haven’t been able to enjoy that sweet privilege—until now! The country’s tax authority just announced that parents are free to name their children after anything from fast food chains and rock bands to their favorite brand of beer.
The move should come as welcome news for Swedish citizens, who have long had to have their baby names approved by the tax authority, which keeps track of the population registry and issues personal identification numbers (much like our Social Security numbers). Over the years parents have fought the department over the right to give their children such monikers as Metallica, Lego, Ikea, Elvis (for a girl), and Budweiser.
But there are still some guidelines in place: authorities won’t allow parents to give children swear words for names—and don’t even think about God, Allah or Devil.

Do you think the crazy baby name trend has gotten out of control, or do you find it refreshing? You can even look up some unique names at Babynameworld.com, and then share your favorites with us!

Shelley Evans-Marshall was teaching ninth-grade at Tippecanoe High School in 2001 when she asked her students to select a book from the American Library Association’s list of the 100 “most challenged books in the United States.”

Many students chose “Heather Has Two Mommies,” by Leslea Newman. It is a children’s novel that talks about families with stepparents, single-parents and same-sex couples. She also assigned Hermann Hesse’s “Siddhartha,” the classic novel that has themes of spirituality, Buddhism, romantic relationships and personal growth.

Though "Siddhartha" was already on the approved reading list, parent’s objected to their children reading the novel, as well as "Heather Has Two Mommies," at a school board meeting. Evans-Marshall spoke out against the controversy and her relationship with the principal became tense. The principal recommended not to renew her contract and the school board agreed with “refuse to communicate with the administration and refused to be a team player” as the reason.

Evans-Marshall filed a lawsuit saying the non-renewal violated her First Amendment rights, since she believes her contract was terminated due to her unconventional reading choices. Last week in Ohio, the judge ruled in favor of the school board, stating it is doubted that the First Amendment even applies to a public school teacher’s decision on reading assignments (due to 2006 Supreme Court decision, Garcetti v. Ceballos).

Though this is an issue of academic freedom, it speaks volumes for how some parents and educators feel about their children learning about same-sex couples, single-parent and stepparent headed homes and non-Western religions and ideas. As a parent, how do you feel about Evans-Marshall’s reading selection for a ninth-grade class? Would you want to encourage or discourage your children from reading these kinds of novels?
Pencils? Check. Notebook? Right on. Cell phone with GPS? Got it.

That last little school supply is going into more and more backpacks this fall as parents concerned about keeping track of their kids want to be able to reach them at a moment's notice.

The Center on Media and Child Health's web site says that 54% of kids 8-12 will have a cell phone in the next three years. Sure, it's peace of mind for moms and dads, but what benefit is there to the child? Most educators probably perceive cell phones as a distraction, as kids can run up phone bills and spend more time on games and ringtones than schoolwork.

CNN provides some excellent thoughts on the matter, including whether or not cell phones actually make kids safer or just provide feelings of safety.
We know what you're thinking. "There's a gender identity spectrum?" Apparently, it's important to know if your child has more masculine or feminine tendencies. We're not sure you need a quiz to tell you that, and it's been our experience that most children like to explore gender neutral as well as typically opposite gender toys (think boys with dolls and girls with trucks.)

Still, as a new dad, we thought you might be interested in Babble.com's Gender Spectrum Quiz, which in a few short questions can tell you if your little one has the typical characteristics of their born gender. We'd love for you to take it and tell us what you think! Is it important to you to know where your child sits on things like this, or do you prefer to just let your kid be a kid? Do you think the toys a child plays with or their responses to the questions in the quiz are an indication of anything other than personal preference?
There’s nothing more adorable than children and dogs, so when a blogger over at Babble put together a little piece giving us five (only five?) reasons kids and dogs are a good mix, we were pleased!

From dogs and children being each other’s playmates to simple family “awe” moments, the five reasons provide a little bit of logic and some hilarity. Our favorite is “Cleaning doesn't get any easier than yelling, “Annie, come!” How true! If you've got a toddler who's idea of a good time is throwing peas during lunch hour, you can bet your dog is going to run over to enjoy a free snack. Thus, saving you time with the broom! Since there's only five we won't ruin them all for you, so go check out the article and let us know what you think.

Aside from the five reasons, we’ve concocted a few of our own; dogs make fantastic companions for kids, keeping them out of trouble, providing a four legged friend, and when they get older having a pet teaches them responsibility. There's a reason dogs are called mans best friend, no? If you're on the fence about adopting a pet in addition to having a baby around (hey, at least they sleep through the night!) research how to introduce your child to a new pet.

Tell us what you think. Do pets and children mix in your family? [Babble]

Looking to adopt a cat? A 44-pound white American Shorthair dubbed "Princess Chunk" was found waddling around this weekend in Voorhees, NJ. Our first thought was, "how the heck can someone loose a cat the size of a toddler?"

The largest tabby since Princess Chunk weighed in at 46 pounds, and since it's death The Guinness Book of World Records has ceased to include "fattest cat' in its series for fear people will purposely try to bulk up their pets. Princess Chunk comes close to the record and he (yup—princess is really a prince) is in need of a good home…and a little bit of exercise.

The cat appeared this morning on “Live with Regis and Kathy Lee” and will be on “Good Morning America” tomorrow. We’re hoping Princess Chunk finds a diet-friendly home, but with all these TV appearances, he could end up as the new spokeskitten for Jenny Craig.

Admit it—before you were a new mom, you might have made fun of the parent with the giant mini-van/SUV/kid-toting, gas-guzzling vehicle. But now you're one of them, because kids come with a lot of stuff, car seats don't fit in a Miata and well, darn it, all those amenities are kind of cool.

So now that you're in the club, be sure you're driving safely. It's been reported that the majority of accidents on the road involve parents and kids, so MSNBC has published a list of the seven biggest driving mistakes moms make , and we thought we'd remind you of a few things not to do with kids in tow.

The number-one mistake is chatting on a cell phone while driving. We have a feeling moms aren't the only ones guilty of this, and many states are banning cell phone use while driving. Another is driving while drowsy. Um, hello? With moms drinking coffee and Redbull to get through the day on five or six hours of sleep, how are they not supposed to drive while sleepy? The advice to get "seven or nine" hours of sleep is pretty comical to us...unless MSNBC plans on hiring night-time nannies for all the mothers of the world. We wish! Still, if you're feeling super-sleepy, get your partner to run errands or wait until tomorrow.

We won't give you any more spoilers, but check out the article, and let us know what you think. Are the reasons legit? Should they be geared towards the general public and not just the moms of the world? After all, there are lots of bad drivers out there. Share your thoughts!

It’s 10:00PM—do you know where your pets are? We hope you do, because according to the American Kennel Club, petnapping (kidnapping a pet) is on the rise! Although cops don't keep track of stolen dogs and kittens as meticulously as they should, a source at the AKC says that three times as many pets were reported stolen in 2008 than in previous years.

So why the animal thievery? Some blame it on the economy and desperate times calling for desperate measures. Owning a dog is pricier than it has ever been, and if someone gets their paws on a designer breed they can turn around and sell it for thousands. Nice money making scheme, huh? The most wanted pets are the toy breeds due to their increasing popularity (thank you, Paris Hilton) and high-price quick turnover. Others petnap simply to return the dog to its original owner in exchange for a sweet reward.

Ask almost any parent, and they'll tell you that while having a baby is bliss (those tiny toes! that great baby giggle!) they could have done without the late night feedings, the tantrums and the messy diapers.

When a couple considers adoption, many times they want a baby to raise as their own from birth, and who could blame them? Yet there is a growing number of kids well past the toddler years that need a family, too.

One adoption web site gives us a list [as if we would need one!] of reasons to consider adopting an older child. Many of them are accurate; first and foremost you get to know the child's background, which is a huge advantage! You'll know their milestones, behavioral issues [if any], and medical history. It is helpful in terms of being able to prepare to raise your child. Yes, older kids do come with challenges of their own—but if you're up for it, getting to know an older child and seeing them overcome their past can be extremely rewarding!

Check out the article, and let us know what you think. Would you consider adopting an older child because you have less baby gear to deal with? Or how about because you can match your interests to the prospective child: she likes reading, you like reading, it's a go!

A few months back, new moms and pops were warned about a little chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which is found in plastics, cans and baby bottles. A slew of studies were performed on rodents and they revealed that even a small amount BPA could potentially be harmful, especially to the tiniest members of the family.

Now a new study by the European Food Safety Authority shows when humans (i.e. not rats and other rodents) are exposed to BPA, our bodies eliminate the substance and no harm can be done to our bodies, big or small.

Now the question on our minds is, if the first study was so down on BPA—claiming it could cause hyperactivity in children—should we believe that this chemical is completely safe now? Does BPA just have a bad rep?

When we think of welcoming a new child into our lives, we can rattle off a list of supplies they need without thinking twice: blankets, wipes, diapers, cribs and changing tables—the list is long, but simple. Who knew headaches could be the cause of brain tumors and a simple cold could land you in the ER? But when Dominique Fisher's daughter Danielle became ill, looking up her symptoms on the internet saved her life.

After six months of symptoms like vertigo, fatigue, horrible headaches and shortness of breath, Danielle was given several false diagnoses of Meningitis and Epstein-Bar virus, among others. It was only after Danielle's mother preformed some diligent online research that she found the symptoms matched up with that of Lyme disease. Danielle is now being treated for antibiotics, but because of the late diagnosis it could be a bit of an uphill battle.

We wanted to share this article because lyme disease is becoming more and more common. If you live in a heavily wooded area, always check for ticks! If you feel like you're experiencing any of the symptoms, immediately let your doctor know—Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed as other ailments, but early treatment can be quite successful!
When you're a new mom, sleep is something you strive for on a daily basis, and something you don't often get, so whenever someone puts some tips out there on how to snag more sleep, and how to parent so that your kids will finally, blissfully pass out, we are eager to gobble it up.

The good fairies at Strollerderby have a list of seven ways to get your kid to sleep. Taking your kids to the park was the first bit of advice, and probably the best since it's summer and parks and pools are a fantastic, free way to give your kids fresh air and exercise. After a day of running around a good nights sleep is sure to follow. Creating a soothing environment and sticking to the routine are other pieces of advice we also stand by. These may not be rocket-science but any tips you can score as a new mom are a blessing, right?

A baby's sleep cycle is quite different from ours, and sleeping in two or three hour chunks is pretty normal. Don't worry though, your time will come! Until then, nap when your baby does.

These days we are often find ourselves bemused by the products that are made for infants and toddlers, so when we stumbled upon these ridiculous baby products, we somehow weren't surprised by some of them.

The first, the Zaky infant pillow in theory, seems like a fantastic product, we won't lie. Everyone knows infants love to sleep near their parents, and a synthetic pair of hands that are large enough to feel like dad's (after a severe bee-sting, anyway) may work...right? And what the heck is up with the baby keeper? Why would you hang a child from the ceiling when they could, I don't know, sit in a highchair?

Most of these products just seem like failed attempts at being cute...our personal favorite is the baby mop, which defiantly piqued our interest. If we're going to have to spend hours everyday chasing our little ones around as they learn to crawl, we might as well get a shiny hardwood floor out of it!

What do you think of these products? Disturbing or plain hilarious? And let's take a poll—which one of these products are you MOST likely to buy?

America doesn't always seem like a baby friendly country. Have you ever tried to maneuverer a stroller through Baby Gap? It's a tiny store, with tiny onesie filled aisles that no new mom who wants to keep her sanity will go in with an infant, or toddler. Forget the grocery store; if you're trying to decide what flavor ice cream to get while your little one decides to see just how loud he can be, you'll probably get dirty looks that have "why can't you shut your kid up" written all over them.

Instead of being helpful, most people today will just appear annoyed that you've distrupted their very important day with a child. Fortunately a kind baggage handler saw her dilemma and took swift action in helping her get settled on the plane.
Another happy ending story for Tuesday? Could it be? Hopefully we will be able to keep it positive all week! We sure hope so. Today we've got a news story for you about a newborn who saved his fathers life....

Morristown, NJ resident John Seville was working in his garden when he felt his legs go numb, and lost the majority of his vision. After being rushed to the local hospital he flat lined and was given several medications to get his heart beating again. He had to undergo surgery to repair his aorta, but many of his organs were failing, including his brain. Scary huh? Now picture his forty-week pregnant wife, standing by his side.

While her husband couldn't breathe on his own, Connie Seville went into labor and delivered a healthy boy. This is where the story takes a turn for the better; Connie brought their newborn down to see his father, and when the newborn was held up in front of his dad's face, John gave a huge smile.

Surreal isn't it? We love hearing stories about new dads and their little ones, because normally the news is full of mommy and me tidbits. The best part of this story, of course, is that John continued to get better, even losing his paralysis!

Read the story, let us know what you think. Is this baby a miracle working or was this just good timing. [ABC News]

How many times can we hear the word Brangelina without wanting to throw up in our mouths a little? Sure, they're the handsome power couple that go about adopting children, starring in blockbuster films, saving the world, and looking damn good doing it but why does society care so much about them? Even Indian newscasts are talking about the couple finally giving birth to their twins yesterday!

And here we are, throwing our opinion into the mix (it's a dangerous cycle, indeed.)

The power couple has been getting outrageous offers for exclusive first photos of the twins for weeks now, and some of the numbers are insane. However, reports show that the money will probably go to charity, so we're glad for that. There’s no doubt that new moms love taking pictures of their newborns. In fact, they're downright obsessed. The best part about taking these pictures is that you get to share them with the rest of the world. But sharing these pictures for money? We’re not exactly sure how we would react.

Tell us, if an opportunity came for you to sell your newborn’s pictures for millions upon millions of dollars, would you do it?

Emma Grace was a little tiny baby brought into the world by a young drug using, smoking mother who had the sense to realize she couldn't care for her, and put her up for adoption (a wise decision), but Emma Grace wasn't an ordinary baby; she was born two weeks premature (at only around four pounds) and was missing her pulmonary artery.

Doctors and nurses worked around the clock to make sure this little lady was well cared for, and even held a baby shower for her in the ICU unit. All wonderful touches, but they still fell short of a family. An adoptive mother backed out at the last minute. It seemed hopeless. Then Daniel Monroe, a cardiac surgery nurse, saw the fuss and questioned where her parents were. Upon hearing that she had none, he knew that he, his wife, and son would want to be her forever family.

Talk about taking your work home with you! This heartwarming story is an incredible reminder that love can be found in amazing and unexpected places.
It's been our experience that new dads (along with their partners) are often at a loss when it comes to a baby that cries constantly. There's nothing in the world you wouldn't do to soothe your little one, but once they are changed, fed and rocked...what next?

We just stumbled across "Eight surprising reasons a baby cries..." Finally! Someone has gotten into the brains of little infants and we can learn how to calm them down without going off the deep end. So if you've been trying to figure our what else might be causing those big fat howls, this might be your cheat sheet.

The number one reason your baby is fussy is that your baby is over dressed. We've seen moms toting their toddlers around the mall dressed for a weekend of Vermont! Think of how fussy you feel when you're wearing something you don't like and then multiply it times five. Makes sense, right? The common rule is if you're not cold, your baby isn't either. The second is that babies get stressed when mom and dad are arguing! We might think that leaving dishes in the sink is something to raise our voices about, but infants just don't get it...we know parents sometimes get frustrated with one another, just try to keep your voices low.

Check out the rest of the list and tell us what you think, or come up with other reasons you think babies really let it out besides boredom or hunger. Do you have a time-tested method for soothing your child?

Kids will be kids, right? They are prone to saying things that make us gasp in horror, and they often go through stages where everything is "gross, yucky, and no good...." According to one UK news article, a toddler's tendency toward pickiness with food could be a racist act.

The National Children's Bureau, largely funded by the government, aims to target kids who may, in the future, become racist by nipping their tendencies in the bud. How do they do this? There's a 366 page guide called Young Children and Racial Justice which helps teachers identify kids that might have a problem. It warns that children might respond negatively to a cultural tradition that is not their own by using terms like "Paki" (to refer to people of Middle Eastern descent) or make comments like "those people smell" to refer to groups of individuals. And, of course, they'll exhibit racist behavior like pushing away a plate of food and saying "yuk!"

Are you still with us? Yes, we are talking about kids as young as three here. And is anyone who wrote this little guide the parent of a toddler? Surely they know kids often refuse new or spicy foods, and just refuse things in general. As a parent, we're sure you're doing all you can to cultivate an environment in which your child can learn about the wide world out there.

We wonder what the next step is—will kids who refuse fish and chips be labeled unpatriotic? Let us know what you think about this issue—and how you get your picky toddler to try new foods!

Most of us have jumped on the eBay bandwagon at one point or another and bid for cheap designer goods, books, electronics...you name it! You can find virtually anything on eBay as long as the search terms permit it...

So what happens when new parents, whether sleep deprived or just feeling naughty put their child on eBay for adoption because he's "gotten too loud..." While the ad might even seem funny to some, and we like to assume it was a joke, the German parents were taken into custody and the child removed from the home. While the child and parents were reunited as it became clear the parents meant no harm, it's clear that the wide, wide world of the web is no place to sell your kid, even in jest.

What do you think of the situation? We think whoever reported the ad was correct to take it off, but do you think questioning the parents on possible child trafficking charges was a bit too much? Or do they deserve harsh punishment?

Just hearing the word stepparent can send chills down our spines. We have seen the movies and read the books where the antagonist is a child, angry with having a "replacement" mom and dad. We are here to let you know it doesn't have to be like that, and a stepparent can play an important positive role in a child's life. So, let's collectively take a deep breth, let go of our social conditioning, and re-learn the roles here.

First and foremost, boundaries: you can't jump in and try to be mom or dad! Stepparenting experts know that it takes time for you and the children to establish a comfortable relationship. We all want to go in and be super-step mom or dad but that's not realistic. Instead of trying to put forth new rules you want the family to adopt, try and take some time to get to know the kids and let them get to know you, for who you are as a person—not as a referee or goalie!

It will take some time before the kids see you in a role of authority, and if they're older, that day may not come at all. How are you managing your expectations as a stepparent? Share your advice with us here!

If you've adopted a cat, the thought of letting them out into the "wild" to hunt probably sends shivers down your spine. Not because you enjoy keeping your feline in captivity, but because you simply don't want them to get squashed as they chase a chipmunk across the street. Thank goodness you're not the only one, and some wacky inventions have been brought forth so that your pet can enjoy the outdoors, without the dangers of modern society.

If you feel like spending a pretty penny you can purchase an enclosure kit, which is essentially a giant outside cage for your cat to climb, and relax in. We think it seems like a little much, but we know there are some cat lovers out there who would do anything for their pets!

If keeping the cat caged seems more like a trip to the kennel than a fun way to spend the afternoon, try out the Radio Fence which while still pricey will allow your pet to wander around the yard without being enclosed. When he gets too close to the fence it will beep and if the cat continues to wander it will give a "static correction" until he returns to the correct spot. We think that's a nice way of saying your cat's going to get shocked until he heads back towards the house.

If you are a city dweller and don't have the extra money to buy your cat a condo there's always the window veranda which lets your pet sniff some fresh air, and catch some rays, while still staying "inside."

Do you think these pet contraptions are silly or brilliant?

If you're like us, having kids isn't going to stop you from dining out once in awhile. When the good old days of being a new mom and carrying around your newborn in a car seat and enjoying a meal while he or she sleeps the entire time are gone, you'll be on a search for family-friendly establishments. After all, some restaurants have gone so far as to ban children from even entering.

What do you think of restaurants baning kids? Shouldn't it be left up to the paying customer if they want to bring their children in, and even yet, shouldn't we be teaching our kids to be well behaved in certain places?

Parents magazine has put together a list of the top ten family restaurants. We are bummed to see most of them are chain restaurants and not very healthy at that. Is this what parents have succumb to? Chili's on a Friday night?

What do you think of the list? Do you think once you have kids you need to suck it up and sit at a Red Robin for dinner instead of a smaller bistro? Do you think many of these smaller places are not kid friendly? We'd love to hear your opinion!

Being pregnant means restrictions, restrictions, restrictions! Most of us have no problem complying because we only want what's most healthy for the little one growing in our tummies, but that doesn't mean we won't miss the Mojito on a hot summer night, or multiple Starbucks runs for that much needed caffeine boost.

So with all these big bold "no ways" what CAN a woman who's expecting chow down on besides fruits and veggies? Something a little sinful perhaps? Even though most raw fish is not safe while you're expecting, you can have California rolls [if you're a sushi lover,] but try to avoid seafood that's farm raised, and if you really need a salmon kick buy wild!

Feel like having a drink when you're celebrating something? Here's a recipe for alcohol free Champagne. Might not have the same effect as Dom Perignon, but it will do for now! If you're in the mood for something sweet, why don't you have vanilla yogurt with chocolate chips? It'll provide you with the calcium you need, and it's sweet and delish. There's lots of pregnancy-safe snacks and they'll leave you and your baby feeling healthy.

When you're a new mom, quick, easy solutions are usually the best ones. It's why most of us use disposable diapers instead of cloth; when we head to the food market we grab ready-made baby food (organic, of course). But what about making your own? Maybe you thought only granola-hippie types made their own baby food, but it's becoming a trend and for good reasons!

First, it's cheaper: baby food runs about a dollar a jar and that's for one feeding...it may not seem like a lot but it adds up! Buying a blender, and produce and meats on weekly basis will be more cost efficient in the long run, and you know your baby will be getting fresh goods. According to reports, so called reputable baby food companies are stiffing our kids by using thickeners, and watering down products...not to mention the chemicals and high sugar content that can be found in jarred food! If you make your own food YOU are controlling what goes into your little one's body.

So, it's cost efficient, and more healthy, but it still takes time that you don't have. But trust us...once you get the hang of it it's easy! If you blend up a load of avocado you can freeze what you have left in ice cube trays—one thawed cube is the perfect serving size for an infant. Knowing that you made what's going into your child's tummy is also very gratifying.

Go here to check out what equipment you will need, and how to get started, and once you feel ready to experiment check out some great recipes! Our favorite is the apple pumpkin puree. Sounds better than mac and cheese from the jar, right?

Now that you've adopted a pet, you'll want to want to supply your cutie with fabulous accesories. We are suckers for adorable dog and cat accessories and today we are sharing some adorable finds to those peace loving pet owners out there! Forget the lame pink raincoat for your Fido—how about peace and love charms for their collars? If you don't like them but still want to stick with the peace sign theme why not a peace sign bed?

If peace signs aren't your thing and your dog is a little bit of a terror, try one of Wooflinks devil muscle tees. They're a far cry from the preppy pink and yellow argyle sweater you might see on the little nipper down the block.
