Gain Your Way to Better Shape

Getting in shape is not about what you're able to lose, but about what you gain. "People set themselves up to fail, thinking that exercise is just about weight loss," says fitness expert, Gin Miller, creator of step training. "The larger goal should be overall increased activity and movement as part of a lifestyle change." Miller offers these don'ts for getting in shape:

- Stop making getting in shape about how you look. Genetically thin people can be as out of shape as someone who is overweight. People need to assess how their bodies function in daily activity and with occasional increases in work demand.

- Stop making comparisons, both to what you used to be able to do and to others. Just because you rode a bike everyday as a kid doesn’t mean you should start out in the Tour de France. Also, just because someone looks similar in age (or older) doesn't mean you should be able to do what they're doing.

- Stop getting information from headlines and "get results" articles. (That marketing machine is designed to sell products, books and magazines.) Put "amazing results" aside and commit to exercise for the health of it.
