Anticancer: A New Way of Life-My Change Nation Interview with David Servan-Schreiber

Is there such thing as a cancer-free lifestyle? Brain cancer survivor, David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph. D., author of Anticancer: A New Way of Life, believes there is. "Even though all of us have cancer cells in our bodies…everyone also has natural defenses that can help slow down the disease and for most of us, contain it altogether," he explains. The key is to "be aware of these defenses and nourish them."

To avoid a cancer diagnosis, Servan-Schreiber suggests the following:

Stop putting things into your body that promote cancer growth. Examples include:
- Cigarette smoke
- Parabens and phthalates in shampoos, perfumes and cosmetic creams
- Aluminum in antiperspirants
- Alkylphenol in cleaning products

Include in your diet things that make your biology stronger in resisting/fighting cancer, such as:
- garlic, leeks and onions
- broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, Chinese cabbage
- soy (tofu, tempeh, miso)
- green tea
- aromatic herbs (rosemary, thyme, mint and basil)

Exercise regularly to strengthen your biology and immune system.

Avoid stress that creates feelings of helplessness. Welcome stress that keeps you engaged in life and allows you to feel that you can do well.
