Geek Chic Driving

Geek Chic Driving

It's kind of like the AV nerd coming back to the high school reunion after cashing in his Google stocks.

You wouldn't have deigned to drive the Geo Metro back then (let alone date someone who did) but the tiny hatchback has made a comeback in a major way. Savvy entrepreneurs have been snapping up the previously mocked vehicles and selling them on eBay, often for much more than the original sticker price.

Getting rich from a Geo Metro? Really? We know the 80s are back in fashion and music, but what's turning these former losers into must-have cruisers? It's the gas mileage. These little road warriors get nearly 40 miles per gallon, almost the same as a 2008 Toyota Prius. And when you consider the price tag—$7,300 compared to $21,000 for a new Prius—it's no wonder commuters are buying them up.

The Metro isn't the only fuel-efficient classic seeing a resurgence in popularity. Late model Hondas and Toyotas have also been flying off used car lots. Let us know if you've been eyeing an old "new car" in order to save on gas. [CNN]
