"Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford and "American Idol" singer Carrie Underwood just broke up with a short text message exchange, proving that dating in the information age has its own set of rules.

The relationship only lasted for a few months, but we can’t help but think there’s something a little off about a couple calling it quits without saying goodbye face-to-face (or at least voice-to-voice. Phones still make calls, right?)

There are no hard and fast rules to the art of text messaging, but there are best practices when it comes to breaking up. Even if the relationship was brief, treat the other party with courtesy and respect and let the adage “do unto others” be your guide. Yes, it may be less messy for you not to see the other person, but hey—if breaking up was easy, Miss Underwood wouldn't have anything to sing about. [Chicago Tribune]
