Phone Numbers for All

Homeless people are often stuck in a terrible cycle: They can’t get a job without a home phone number and they can’t get a home number without a job. But cycles can be broken. Things can change. Through Project Homeless Connect, Google provides free phone numbers and voicemail to the homeless in San Francisco.

The numbers are distributed through shelters and agencies, which allow those who are homeless to record a voicemail greeting and check their messages from any phone. This program is particularly wonderful in that the numbers do not stand out in any way — they are just regular local phone numbers.

Everyone deserves a chance to live a happier life, and sometimes a phone number is all it takes.
