my own personal thoughts on this question -- a) it's tough!!, b) it's ok to look at happiness over a certain amount of time... meaning I don't expect to be happy every day. "some days are a 10 and others are not so good" (who said that?). If over the week, you feel happy 5 days out of 7- that's great. 6 out 0f 7 (wow) you are rare. When everything is telling you to believe things that will make you unhappy -- tell yourself every good thing you know to be true and trust that this is so.
For me it's about gratitude... reminding myself each day how lucky I am to be who I am, where I am and doing something I love.
I also try to stop and smell the roses as often as possible ... looking at the moon (did you catch the lunar eclipse?), enjoying the snow, not minding the rain, soaking up the sun. If you look for reasons to be happy in nature, I'm sure you'll find plenty of them.
